In recent years, many celebrities including singer Fong Fei-fei, Tiger Wang, Yen Cheng-kuo, and Na Tang have succumbed to lung cancer or lung adenocarcinoma. Other prominent figures such as former Vice President Chen Chien-Jen, Vincent Siew, Quanta founder Barry Lam, and media personality Sisy Chen have battled lung adenocarcinoma. Known as Taiwan's "silent killer" and even dubbed the "new national disease," lung cancer has the highest incidence rate and has been the leading cause of cancer deaths for years, posing a major threat to public health.
Lung cancer has complex causes. Besides tobacco exposure (including secondhand and thirdhand smoke), factors include air pollution (PM2.5), occupational exposure (asbestos, radon), lung disease history, family history, and possible cooking fume exposure. Compared to other cancers, lung cancer shows few early signs, and many patients are non-smokers, causing the disease to be overlooked until middle or late stages when treatment becomes much more difficult.
The key to lung cancer prevention is "detection" and "prevention." Stay alert to symptoms (persistent cough, blood-streaked phlegm, ongoing chest pain), reduce carcinogen exposure, and undergo regular health screenings (chest X-rays, low-dose computed tomography (LDCT)) to identify lesions early and halt disease progression.
