Taiwan's first hantavirus death of 2026 was recently reported in Da'an District, Taipei City, drawing public attention to household and public hygiene. Hantavirus syndrome is a zoonotic disease transmitted mainly by virus-carrying rodents such as rats and mice. The virus can be present in the urine, feces and saliva of infected rodents that show no symptoms, with the highest concentration in their lungs. People may become infected by inhaling or touching airborne dust or objects contaminated with the secretions or excreta of infected rodents, or by being bitten or scratched by a virus-carrying rodent.
Early symptoms resemble a cold, such as fever, headache and muscle aches, and may be accompanied by nausea and abdominal pain. Severe cases can progress to kidney or lung failure. The incubation period usually ranges from a few days to two months.
The key to preventing hantavirus syndrome is rodent control. Please follow the "Three Nos" policy: don't let rodents in, don't let them nest, and don't let them feed, to reduce rodent activity and the risk of human contact. If suspected symptoms appear, wear a mask, seek medical attention promptly, and tell your doctor about any relevant contact and activity history to support early diagnosis and treatment.
