October is International Breast Cancer Awareness Month (also known as "Pink October"), a time to raise public awareness of breast cancer prevention, early detection, and timely treatment. Breast cancer is the leading threat to women's health; with early detection and early treatment, the five-year survival rate for early-stage breast cancer can exceed 90%.
The causes of breast cancer are complex. Besides age, family history, and specific genetic mutations, key factors include early menarche or late menopause, long-term exposure to female hormones, unhealthy eating habits, and lack of exercise. Notably, most breast cancer patients have no clear family history, so every woman should pay attention to her breast health and get screened at the recommended age.
Regular breast cancer screening helps detect lesions early, before symptoms appear, which improves treatment outcomes and lowers the risk of dying from breast cancer. Since 2025, the Health Promotion Administration has expanded government-funded breast cancer screening to women aged 40 to 74, offering a free mammogram every two years. In addition to regular screening, everyday self-observation and a healthy lifestyle, such as regular exercise, a healthy weight, a balanced diet, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol, can help reduce the risk of breast cancer and other chronic diseases!
