The recent sudden death of a public figure from acute leukemia (blood cancer) has drawn wide public attention. Although leukemia is not among the ten most prevalent cancers in Taiwan, acute leukemia progresses rapidly and should not be overlooked.
When abnormal blood-forming cells interfere with the production of normal blood cells, symptoms such as recurrent fever, unexplained bleeding or bruising, persistent fatigue, dizziness and shortness of breath may appear. Because these early signs are non-specific, they are easily mistaken for a cold or overwork, delaying medical care.
Build healthy habits, keep a regular routine, and avoid long-term exposure to harmful chemicals or high doses of ionizing radiation. If the symptoms above appear, persist or recur, seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis helps prevent the disease from worsening and improves the chance of a cure.
